Though promoted as a western, writer-director Jane Campion’s beautiful new film, The Power of the Dog, is really a rural drama. It’s closer to a story by William Faulkner, Erskine Caldwell, or Louise Erdrich than it a genre film. Rather than featuring people who wear guns it focuses on those who live a life of hard work — but there’s more than enough drama to go around.
