There are a couple of reasons to cast a cold eye at co-writer/director Guillermo del Toro’s new version of Nightmare Alley. William Lindsay Gresham’s grim carnivalesque novel first saw the big screen in 1947, starring Tyrone Power as Stan Carlisle, the carny con man who winds up the ultimate mark as he falls afoul of his own crookedness.
