Nevada County Special Film Programming for June 2025

Like many of you, I get so damned sick and tired of Nevada County’s sunshine and blue skies, only the cool, dark confines of a movie theatre can relieve my ennui. With June temperatures here again, it’s time for another brief survey of another month of mostly excellent repertory film programming at our local theatres.

The Prime Cinemas are taking the Summer off as far as repertory programming goes (though there are some special kid’s films available) but The Onyx (both Nevada City and Downtown) will carry on with some fine films from cinema’s past and near present. There’s also the added treat of this year’s one-and-only, unmissable Nevada City Film Festival. It’s all the more reason to come in from the heat.

Wild at Heart (1990) (Sunday, June 1, The Onyx Downtown, Nevada Theatre, 7:00 PM). Among the late wizard David Lynch’s most controversial films, this beautifully photographed camp take on The Wizard of Oz will put off some viewers for its extreme violence while others may weary of its relentless and extremely campy tone (as I did). It has its fans, though I’m not one of them.
