Before Sunrise (1995) (Sunday, February 2, The Onyx Downtown, 7:30 PM) Valentine Day month opens on a sweet note at the Onyx Downtown’s Sunday Night screenings with writer-director Richard Linklater’s luminous and tender road trip romance and character study about a fleeting affair between a young American (Ethan Hawke), who’s backpacking solo through Europe, and the young student he meets (Julie Delpy). Over the course of a couple days, romance blossoms as the pair take us on a lovely tour of Vienna. That’s all there is and that’s all you need to know in this bright and touching wonderful Brief Encounter (1940) for our time. With its bright surfaces and kind heart, it’s a beautifully photographed reflection on youth, time, and life’s ephemerality, featuring winning performances by both Hawke and Delpy.
