It was while sitting in the Raulf Theatre in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in 1967 that my young soul, freshly flooded with hormones, was first stung by a movie with a downbeat ending. I’d seen movies with unhappy endings before, but they didn’t move me. This one did.
